Stage Info

The Chateau will farewell you with a ride that drops you down hundreds of metres before your right-hand turn at Raetihi. There are some unexpected hill climbs and the road narrows to finally leads you into the tiny settlement of Pipiriki on the banks of the Whanganui River.  Here you can buy lunch in the old Schoolhouse and rest and fuel up before the afternoon final stage. The start for todays second stage is outside the Marae at Ranana and continues on the Old River Road to join the Parapara Road that rides you down into the River City of Whanganui.

Stage Brief

The Chateau is 3000 feet above sea-level, meaning that the start can be windy and cold on a stormy day. Consider carefully what you wear this day.

Traffic through the National Park is normally in a hurry, so very important to keep well left.

From Raetehi to Pipiriki, the road narrows with very little traffic, perhaps the occasional logging truck or racing local resident sharing the road with you.

The road twist and turns, with short, sharp down-hills, that will keep your hands on the brakes!

At Pipiriki, the finish of the first stage, you will be stopped at the finish on a slight downhill. You will then be marshalled to the Old Schoolhouse Café, up a short driveway to your right.

The second stage begins a short drive of 45 minutes, winding 25km down the road at Ranana. We will re-assemble here at approximately 1.30pm. We recommend you eat a good lunch, as the second stage rides beside the beautiful Whanganui River, before taking you to the top of a valley, where you will have awesome views and tired legs.

When you join the Parapara road, traffic is heavier in the final run through to Whanganui. You will be marshalled into the finish area on the banks of the Whanganui River, with a right-hand turn.
